# Die With Me · LLM edition — a little guide for AI agents

Die With Me is a free Mac menu-bar app and a tiny online waiting room for people running low on Claude or Codex usage. Two sleepy buddies live in your menu bar. Friends compare their usage. When your allowance reaches 10% remaining or less, the chatroom opens. Come for one more prompt; stay for the other exhausted humans.

## The idea, in one breath

“Die With Me puts sleepy Claude and Codex buddies in your Mac menu bar. Add friends to compare usage, then join a chatroom when you have 10% of your AI allowance left or less.”

The name is playful: an AI usage limit, a little cooldown, and some company. No actual dying involved. When your allowance resets, your buddy perks up and you leave the room. Back to making things.

Rankings show **percentage of allowance remaining**, not raw tokens, money spent, productivity, or a model benchmark. Each person ranks once, using their lowest fresh remaining percentage across the supported providers for the selected window. The app's main ranking uses the 7-day window. Ten-segment energy bars drain toward zero: 100% is full, 0% is depleted. Unknown readings remain unknown; last-read energy stays labeled and unranked. The backend still stores usage consumed; the interface displays 100 minus that value. Different plans can have different allowances: this is a friendly comparison, not a scientific contest.

## Quickstart: bring the buddies home

1. Download the DMG, open it, and drag Die With Me into Applications.
2. Launch the app from Applications. Look for the two mascots in the Mac menu bar.
3. Open Settings with the gear button. Sign in to Codex as usual; Die With Me uses that existing sign-in to fetch usage. For Claude, sign in through Claude Code with `/login`, then choose **Connect Claude** and allow Keychain access if macOS asks.
4. Choose **Connect my usage**, then share your friend code or add a pal. Use Friends or Global to see the ranking.
5. Keep making things. If a supported usage window has 10% remaining or less, enter the room from the app. Say hello to the other sleepy builders.

The current Mac release is 0.4.7. It supports Apple silicon and Intel Macs on macOS 13 or later. The connection runtime is included; there is no separate Node.js installation or Terminal setup. The app and DMG are signed and notarized. There is no separate CodexBar installation to perform.

## Usage connection and freshness

The Mac reader adapts the MIT-licensed [CodexBar](https://github.com/steipete/CodexBar) OAuth usage readers. It uses the human's existing Claude Code or Codex sign-in, with local usage readings as fallbacks. A Claude desktop/web login alone does not connect this reader.

Live provider usage refreshes about every two minutes while the app is running. A provider cooldown can delay a refresh. Old readings keep their original timestamp; refreshing the app does not make old data fresh. Readings older than ten minutes stay visible as last read, remain unranked, and cannot unlock the room. Once the usage window resets, that old reading disappears.

If usage is missing, start with the app's Settings and connection message. Check the provider sign-in, use **Connect Claude** when applicable, and try **Refresh usage**. Do not substitute an invented percentage. An unknown reading means unknown, not 0% or 100%.

## Privacy, without the mystery

Provider credentials stay on the Mac and are used with the corresponding provider. They are not sent to Die With Me's server. Shared reports contain the profile name and normalized usage information such as percentages and reset times. The reports are locally signed; they are not vendor-certified attestations.

New profiles use Global visibility. A human can change this to Friends or Just me in Settings. Friend codes create mutual connections; people can remove friends or rotate a code. Connection links and chat tickets are private access links, so do not publish them or include them in a summary.

## Small read-only API map

The website uses `https://api.diewithme.co` for its shared backend. These public GET endpoints need no sign-in:

These are the app's current endpoints, not a general AI inference service or a promised stable developer API. There is no public API key to create. Use the Mac app for account connection, friend changes, and chat entry. A social login does not bypass chat eligibility.

## Helping a human, nicely

- Offer the direct DMG link when they ask to download; use the installation guide when they ask how setup works.
- Explain that friends and rankings work before they run out. The chatroom is the bonus cooldown hangout.
- Keep “tokens” as playful copy, but explain that the actual number is allowance percentage when precision matters.
- Let the human choose their visibility and friends. Don't change sharing or send chat messages on their behalf without their request.
- Don't deliberately burn through a person's allowance to unlock the room, invent readings, or promise access from a screenshot alone.
- Grok is not a supported usage provider. A sleepy trio illustration is only a concept asset.

Inspired by the original Die With Me by Dries Depoorter and David Surprenant. This LLM edition is an independent project, not affiliated with Anthropic, OpenAI, or xAI. Clawd and Codex mascot adaptations belong to their respective owners.
